A workshop with the Sámi communities in Inari

On 20 February 2025, DIGICHer organised a workshop with the Sámi communities in Inari (Finland) to explore their needs, opinions and wishes related to digitisation of their cultural heritage. The workshop was attended by a group of community representatives selected from those connected with the Sámi communities, culture and digital cultural heritage.

The workshop used several exploratory design tools:

  • Panel discussion (general ideas and thoughts about the topic, feelings, possibilities, threats)

  • Idea map

  • Evaluation map (of suggestions for a digitising project)ry

  • The design tools used were:

  • Panel discussion (general ideas and thoughts about the topic, feelings, possibilities, threats)

  • Idea map

  • Evaluation map (of suggestions for a digitising project)

The tools are collaborative activities(discussion and production of written texts) led by the research team that provided valuable data to:

  • Capture the community's general sentiment towards digitisation and understand the community's perception of its cultural heritage and identity.

  • Understand the needs, desires, fears, visions, and hopes the community has for the future of its cultural heritage.

  • Understand what resources and skills the community can use to support and develop pilot projects.

The outputs of the workshops will be used to inform DIGICHer's next steps towards developing a framework that promotes equity, inclusion and diversity in the representation of digital cultural content.
